Stranger Things season 1 was set in 1983, season 2 a year later, and season 3 in the summer of 1985. Following this pattern, Stranger Things season 4 should be set in 1986 - in theory, that is. The Stranger Things season 4 announcement doesn't offer an answer on this, but if the first plot clue is correct, then this season could be set in different years.
It's possible he got a shot into the thing's face, which seems to be its weak point. It's also possible Will is "sensitive" and has powers of his own, powers that scared the monster. Or that hid him from it. Maybe Barb didn't. But I think what happened to Will in the Upside Down will be a big focus for season 2.
